John Calvin Maxwell defines leadership as: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”.
Irrespective of how you define a leader, President Bio has proven to be a great difference maker between success and failure. He is a leader, a futuristic visionary, who knows how to turn his ideas into lasting success stories.
Let me take this opportunity to bring to light some of the important leadership qualities of President Julius Maada Bio:
1. The 34th President of United States, Dwight David Eisenhower once observed that: “The supreme quality of leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible”. Honesty and integrity are two important ingredients which make President Bio a good and charismatic leader. These qualities are what he has pledged to instill in every well-meaning Sierra Leonean in and out of government service. No doubt his fight against corruption has made his administration to attract admiration and confidence from investors across the world. Leaders only succeed when they stick to their values and core beliefs. Without ethics, this will not be possible.
2. To be an effective leader, you should be confident enough to ensure that others follow your commands respectfully. If you are hesitant about your own decisions and persona, then your subordinates will never follow you. As a leader, President Bio has earned the confidence to show swagger and assertiveness. This has earned him the respect and admiration by not only his subordinates but also that of the entire citizenry. While this is not say that President Bio is overconfident, it is merely to say that he has reflected the degree of confidence required to ensure that people have trust in his leadership ability.
3. A good and determined leader inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. If one can’t do this then they are not a leader. President Bio has so much inspired a lot of people in and out of the country. He has showcased to the nation that patience is a virtue that one can not get in hurry. One of the most difficult jobs for a leader is their ability to persuade others to follow. It can only be possible if you inspire your followers by setting a good example. When the going gets tough, people look up to their leaders and see how they react to a situation. If a leader handles a circumstance well, they will follow you. A leader should think positively and this positive approach should be visible through your actions. Good leaders stay calm under pressure and keep the motivation level up. As John Quincy Adams puts it: “If you are successful in inspiring your subordinates, you can easily overcome any current and future challenge easily”.
4. One of the greatest indications of President Bio being a visionary leader was when he answered to the call of innovation – the process of inventing new ideas or methods. The kind of innovation that distinguishes between a leader and a follower. In order to get ahead in today’s fast-paced world, President Bio has introduced the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation with the structures of governance to match up the trend in today’s world.
