The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has received the consent of H.E. President Julius Maada Bio through the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Hon. Dr. Schwartz and the Chief Justice of Sierra Leone Hon. Charm, to establish a special court that will deal with only corruption related cases and such court will be held at the precincts of the former Special Court for Sierra Leone.
This was revealed by Senior ACC Prosecutor, Emmanuel Koivaya Amara last Thursday 9th August 2018 to journalists during the usual government weekly press briefing in Freetown.
Mr. Emmanuel Koivaya Amara Esq said, the current Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led regime will rename the premises of Special Court for Sierra Leone along Jomo Kenyatta Road in New Englandville to now be known as the Sierra Leone Special Court for Corruption.
He said the Ministry of Works has already taken ACC on a conducted tour of the premises and “pretty soon, the court will start operating”.
Mr. Amara disclosed that President Bio upon consultation with the Chief Justice, Abdulai Charm will soon appoint a Sierra Leonean Judge with undiluted and reputable character and also a foreign Judge with similar good character to head the Special Court for Corruption in Sierra Leone.
This proposed court, he said, will speedily and adequately try all corruption related matters within the shortest possible time. He went on to say that once this court is constituted, all corruption matters charged in that court will give their verdicts within less than one month. He said no case will exceed more than one month.
He said all corruption matters which files have been completed before June 28 this year have been sent to court to commence trial and amongst them is the ‘Shears Moses case’. He continued that the ACC has launched a number of fresh investigations to add to the ones which they have already investigated.
He recalled that the Special Court for Sierra Leone was a United Nations backed Court established to try those who bear the greatest responsibility during the war. He said this new special court is for the war against corruption.
It can be recalled that President Bio has declared what he calls a war against corruption. However, there have been extensive outcries and outrage amongst a section of Sierra Leoneans who claim that the SLPP led government and its ACC appendage are on a mere witch-hunt of the former APC-led government so as to kill the main opposition APC party and by extension, kill the viability of multi-party democracy inside Sierra Leone.
