SALCAB Expands Internet Penetration In Sierra Leone

In an effort to increase the quality of internet service for wider market penetration, Sierra Leone Cable Limited on Friday 16th November 2018, officially launched its new national fibre bundle and unveiled its new logo.

Ismeal Kebbay, Managing Director, SALCAB while launching the new product at SALCAB landing station on Bendu Drive in Freetown stated that upgrading of the country from 83G of data to 260G is to allow clients to rely on the fibre cable to connect their backhaul base stations and enhance transmission and distribution of data.

Kebbay noted that the upgrade is a drive towards a digital economy stating that SALCAB’s additional new product “Connect plus ” offers customers opportunity to subscribe to IP transit in major cities with service quality matched to what is currently offered at the cable landing station in Freetown.

The Managing Director further spoke on SALCAB’s desire to constantly continue upgrading hard and software application for improved quality service.

He disclosed, “We have aspirations to offer services to the sub region by attracting CAPEX investment that will allow us to deploy a second submarine Cable that will serve as a redundancy to the ACE cable.”

“This capability will enable us to offer regional redundancy service to Liberia, Guinea and other markets through the ECOWAN network.” Kebbay, while pointing out SALCAB’s aspiration for the development of an ecosystem for local content creation, online services and increase share of ICT for the implant of e-governance and e-administration and e-learning in the country added that SALCAB have re-engineered the business models of the submarine and terrestrial infrastructure which churned out a 48% reduction in the cost of bandwidth for IP transit and IP lease circuit.

Kebbay revealed that Sierra Leone is yet to completely uncover good Internet penetration stating that broadband penetration remains low at 2%.

The critical challenge that are creating market expansion barriers, Kebbay said are backhaul and the operating cost of running, low revenue per user and shallow digital literacy rate.

Speaking on the new SALCAB logo, Sorie Fofana, Board Chair, added that an initial baseline review carried out recently shows that there is a proper management of resources at SALCAB.
